“There should be McDonald’s everywhere. Coast to coast. Sea to shining sea.” – The Founder
First of all, Happy Memorial Day! I hope we all get to spend time with family while reflecting on the sacrifices that others have made for us.
During my first week in Dubai, I saw a food delivery motorcycle whip past me as I headed for a taxi. The sight of a food delivery motorcycle did not shock me as Dubai has an anything, anytime, anywhere delivery culture. I can order groceries, coffee, dry cleaning, and even a coffee from the comfort of my couch. However, this particular time as the logo of McDonald’s became visible, all I could do was shake my head.
McDonald’s delivers? Seriously? The concept of that as an American, where there is a McDonald’s on every corner was really bizarre. For me, McDonald’s is the quick on the go stop when you are hungry and pressed for time. The idea of placing an order and waiting for the arrival of your big mac, large fry, and McFlurry seemed really crazy to me! I would never order McDonald’s for delivery!
However, the culture in Dubai is very different. McDonald’s aren’t on every corner and residents prefer to order delivery, especially since it is free most of the time. When my cousins in Dubai were younger, they would order a single coke for delivery just because they could. In fact, if a restaurant does not have a delivery service or food that is easily delivered, unless it is fine dining, they are likely to go out of business extremely quick.
Dubai’s convenience can be shocking at first, but it’s easy to get used to. So easy that I miss it when I’m visiting back home. I wonder how it will be when we move back to the United States!
